I’ve been thinking about the place of real sex on fictional movies, such as lust and caution dont really have a consensus about it yet

so much to think about! i definitely have more to say about the brown bunny (i think overall it is a very complicated and ethically bad film though chloe's participation seems like it was very much her own choice) and i've seen the 1999 film romance, there's a question of why simulated vs unsimulated sex beyond shock value and a larger question about where the spectrum between erotic film and pornography starts and ends ... i might be due for a JSTOR search to see if there's any good writing on the matter...

For a (not groundbreaking or surprising yet interesting) background on how sex is made in movies from female perspectives check out new documentary “body parts”

Oh this was beautiful and very detailed. I was thinking about nymphomaniac and titane as I was reading this, thank you mentioning those!

I also think part of the uncomfortable feeling that comes from watching sex scenes is shame from actually enjoying them sometimes.

charlie squire's avatar

yeah i agree, tried to imply that with the idea that we're uncomfortable because we're ashamed because of a social norm against voyeurism :)

Are you familiar with Japanese pink films? They made me reevaluate the relationship between film and sex, and the sphere itself is very interesting!

I'm not! I'll have to check it out!

Thoughts on My Own Private Idaho (if you've seen it?) The sex scenes are done as a series of stills rather than moving picture. It's a really interesting way to depict sex in a film almost entirely about sex

Brand New Cherry Flavor is worth the watch just for this aspect.

You don’t mention the influence of mainstreaming “porn”? Is it that passé already? We have capitulated.
